A Personal Note from Heidi Ganahl
As a mom with four children, three under the age of 7, it both hurts and angers me to see so many news stories every single day about children of all ages being hurt, abused, and even killed by the adults they depend on for a sense of safety, their basic needs, a feeling of family and belonging, and for love.
An average of four or five innocent children are killed as a result of child abuse or neglect every single day in our country, according to Childhelp.org. And every year, there are more than 3 million reports of child abuse made in the United Sates, involving more than 6 million children (some reports include multiple children). As heartbreaking and challenging
As heartbreaking and challenging as it is to discuss the issue of the abuse and neglect of children, it is our responsibility as parents to our own children, and as citizens of our communities to raise awareness and speak out for and in defense of these small, helpless victims.
Initially, I founded Moms Fight Back because I wanted a conduit for real change after my daughter, my oldest child, experienced something no sweet, happy, innocent teenage girl should ever have to go through and then was re-victimized by a DA and court system that was ill-equipped to make things right for her.
I was disillusioned and confused about what my family could truly depend on when it came to our government and our court system, but I began to educate myself in the hope of creating change. Since then I’ve become increasingly aware of all the ways in which our children are threatened and how little our society is prepared to offer them the help, protection, and healing they need in the aftermath of being victimized.
With this eBook, I hope to start an open conversation about child abuse, to bring awareness as the first step toward change, and most importantly, to offer information for how and where to get help for a child who is being abused or neglected.
Through this awareness and dialog, we can all be an active part of the solution to the very real problem of child abuse in Colorado. Through this conversation, we begin to be a part of the solution. Thank you for listening. Thank you for contributing your own voice by forwarding this eBook, sharing one piece of information you read here, or standing up for the child you suspect is being harmed by making an anonymous report.
