911 Tips

If your child is using or addicted to drugs or alcohol:

  • Listen to your child and speak candidly with them about their use.
  • Locate and confiscate all drugs, alcohol, and related paraphernalia.
  • Test your child at a clinic, doctor’s office or use a home kit.
  • Set up counseling sessions for your child with an expert.
  • Contact a treatment facility that focuses on children and families.

These are the facts...

In recent years, Colorado students in grades 9 to 12 have reported the following: 65.5% had at least one drink of alcohol on one or more days during their life. 19.4% had their first drink of alcohol, other than a few sips, before age 13. 36.4% had at least one drink of alcohol on one or more occasions in the past 30 days. 22.3% had five or more drinks of alcohol in a row (binge drinking) in the past 30 days. Almost 72% of young people who start drinking before age 15 will try marijuana, and almost 50% will use other illicit drugs. Up to 56.5% of Colorado teens have used some form of illegal drug by the 12th grade, with up to 6.8% having used an illegal drug before age 13.
